Texas Congressional Community Policing Summit 2015

January 15, 2015 § Leave a comment

I was given the opportunity to be an advisor for a panelist at the Texas Congressional Community Policing Summit at UTA in Arlington. The hosts were Rep. EBJ and Rep. Veasey in partnership with Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Rep. Al Green and Gary Bledsoe.

Some of the points I advised to address were to correct the SB158 bill that I’ve addressed twice in a previous post; to strengthen the Citizens Review Board by granting the power to subpoena, forming an investigation committee to submit to the grand jury, and abolishing the “72 hour review” policy and many other ways.

Other panelists suggested recruiting from Black communities and more… yes, more diversity training. Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson attested, in fact, his department does target black communities. He was apart of the second panel, and sat next to Collete Flanagan, founder of Mother Against Police Brutality.

Overall I can only assume the mission of the event, to gather ideas from the community, was successful.
